The short answer: choose a trustworthy translation that fits how you will actually read it. Start with NLT for the clearest first read, NIV for an all-around balance, ESV for close study, or NKJV for a traditional feel in modern English.

A good place to start

Choose the closest answer. You are not locking yourself into one “perfect” translation—just finding the best place to begin.

NLT Easiest place to begin
Clear, natural English for new readers, devotional reading, and reading aloud.
NIV An all-around starting point
A familiar balance of accuracy and readability for daily use and group study.
ESV For close study
Formal and word-conscious, but still designed to read with clarity and a literary rhythm.
NKJV A modern traditional choice
The cadence of the KJV tradition with much of the older vocabulary updated.

Understand the difference

Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek do not map neatly into English. Some teams preserve more of the original form; others make the meaning more immediately natural. Both approaches require interpretation.

There is no single “best” translation. There is a best fit for your purpose.

Formal does not automatically mean hard to read. ESV sits on the formal side, yet it was intentionally shaped for readability and literary clarity. KJV feels more difficult mainly because its English is four centuries old. Use the spectrum to understand translation philosophy—not as a reading-level score.

Think beyond the translation

Translation is only the first decision. A readable print size, useful notes, a comfortable size, and a cover you will actually carry can matter just as much in daily use. Choose the translation first, then choose the edition and physical format.

  1. Choose the translation. Decide how formal, familiar, or easy to read you want the text to feel.
  2. Choose the edition. Study notes, journaling space, references, devotional content, or a Catholic edition.
  3. Choose the physical Bible. Print size, overall size, cover material, color, and personalization determine whether it fits real life.

A little help choosing

When church use or doctrine matters, ask your pastor, priest, or study leader which edition your community uses.

Choose NIV if you prioritize smooth daily reading and broad familiarity. Choose ESV if you prefer a more formal, word-conscious style for close study and memorization. Both are respected modern translations, and many readers use one alongside the other.
